1789 was when the first presidential election was held, the first Congress convened, and the Bill of Rights proposed.

The country was created in that period. I guess we almost ended up with a king. There was constant fighting about the constitution. Today we revere that document to an almost religious extent. But it could have been so different so easy.

Gaining independence was one thing .. rebuilding a stable government to replace what was ejected was another, much tougher challenge. We see the same process now taking place in Iraq but too often fail to see the comparisons.
