Hi
I am from Calgary originally and go there a few times a year. I find Calgary to be a fairly open minded place. Although, as I find most anywhere in the world, it is not without its share of people who are less tolerant.
However, on the whole, I find Calgary to be a very open and accepting city to immigrants. When I compare it to other places I have lived like London, Paris, or Boston then there is no question. Calgarians are very open and accepting!
Our country and city were built on people coming from all over to help make that happen. Most people still realise that.
Good luck with your move. I am sure you will love the city.

Alberta is the most racist part of Canada but there is a huge Asian community in Calgary and even Asian friendly in terms of signs in some places. Like most places in the world immigration is becoming less and less tolerated. Not so much because of racism but just because there have been some people have lobbied to have our culture dictated to us for the benefit of people from other cultures. I think if you are respectful of our culture and try to become part of it rather then just being Asian in Canada, people will appriciate this. This is not to say that you should forget where you are coming from our lose your culture. I am Canadian but I live in Europe now and have lived in the Middle East as well so I think I know a thing or too about living as an immigrant. I hope you enjoy it though. Take some time to check out the Mountians of Kananaskis and experience the beauty of Canada.
Oh and I should add one thing that drives Canadians nut from Asian. When you are walking down the street really slowly and don't make room for people to pass you on the side walk. That is the only thing I have really noticed to watch out for.

Calgary is ok, and its true Toronto has a huge Asian population and so does Vancouver. But you will not be the only Asian in Calgary. I would like to suggest, that you will always speak English with your family once you leave the house, and do not spit or burb or pass wind in public, its considered bad manners. The western culture is different, and also about the language, if you're in a store please speak English. Its inconsiderate to speak with your wife, kids etc. in your language when Canadians are present. I hope this helps. Been an immigrant myself.

I agree that Vancouver, especially, would be a better choice, particularly because it has a huge asian population. I am certain you could feel very much at home in Vancouver.
However, in my experience (I am not asian though), Calgary was open, at least than most places I have been in the US. I don't know about the asian population, but there is a very large east indian population, and they seem to have few problems there. A good friend is persian, and he had no problems in Calgary.

Tonnes of different races live in Calgary, you will be very welcome here! Sure, there are a few people in the city that are intolerant, but that is in every city. (We're trying to get rid of those people!) The Northeast and Southeast quadrants of Calgary typically have the larger numbers of non-Caucasian people.
In response to Mightymo, I can't think of anyone who feels offended hearing people in shops speaking a language other than English. If you are lucky enough to speak another language other than English, that's great! Not all people in Calgary speak only (or even primarily) English.

Yes! There is great diversity in Calgary, I think you will love it. The people are very friendly, but like anywhere you go you will bump into jerks. There are lots of Asians in Calgary and Edmonton (Capital of Alberta, 3hours North of Calgary).

Alberta has a reputation in the rest of Canada for being more racist than most (goes with being most religious, I guess). Vancouver, Toronto, or Montreal would be much better choices.
