Look for a used car 3-4 years old, preferably from a new car dealer under "Certified Preowned" program.
Honda Accord - very reliable, good midsize car.
Used Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic - a bit smaller, but very reliable and also cheap on gas. Camry is good too. Any of these cars, if well maintained, will last you for 4-5 years with no problem. Just have it inspected by your mechanic before purchase.

12K out of the door or before tax ?
What do you use it for ? how many people do you need to drive along ?
In general, corrolla is the best choice. But 12K can not get a new corrolla.
Civic is in the range for 14K.
I will say either get a Hyundai or a pick up truck.
If you need a commute car for war or long drive, go with the Hyundai.
if not, just get a pick up truck, that should be under 10K from ford or Mazda.
------------- Unless you don't mind a used car
Then 12K opens up a lot of options.

I don't think you can get a new car for that price, your gonna have to add about $3000.00 to that to get a halfway decent new car.
