And what happened, and how was the problem dealt with? Surely, society being threatened by subversive forces is not a new thing. What was done to cope with it in other, historical periods, do you know?

Tahini,

The first that comes to mind,
which was very effective, was
used during the Boer War in
Southern Africa.
It was then define as 'guerrilla'
warfare, but there are similarities.
The end result was Apartheid in
South Africa. Read 'The Covenant'
by James Michener - a must.

Other terrorism closer to our time
frame is prior to the foundation of
the Nation of Israel. Terrorism was
used by Jews mainly against the
British. A couple of good books
are 'Arab and Jew' by David K. Shipler'
and 'Beirut to Jerusalem' by Thomas
L, Friedman. Great reading, especially
helpful in understanding (somewhat)
today's global scenario as set by the
Middle East situation.

Hope this helps-

Probably the most recent precedent was the anarchist movement, which began in Russia in the late 19th century and spread fairly quickly throughout Western Europe and North America (look up Bakunin). It's main weapon was political assassination. At least one American president was assassinated by an anarchist, as was Darcy MacGee (a Canadian politician). And it was an anarchist who assassinated Archduke Ferdinand, which is the event generally credited for starting the First World War.

As far as coping with it, mass arrests were common (some justified, most not, just like today). Essentially, though, it probably just died out due to disinterest. That isn't likely to happen with today's situation, because religious fanaticism is far more powerful and long-lasting than political discontent.

Sure, but is difficult to associate terrorism to what Hannibal, Cesar Borgia, French resistance, Goths, Francs, Galic did before.

Even is dificult to associate past events of North ireland and Spain to actual situation.

Each event is a mixture of many different facts and situations. Why terrorism increase on last 10 years? Hezbolah were created due the fact when Israel invaded Lebanon to hunt Arafat. and Bin Laden were created to maintain Russian in bad situation in Afeghanistan. Bin Laden belongs to a quite rich MiddleEast family (check out CIA: Secret Wars documentary)

USA/UK/Spain actual terrorism (Who invaded Iraq) are just a consequence from later acts. Turky and Egypt are direct responses from awakened groups. There is no action without reaction.

All badly actual situation are just a reflex of commercial decisions. Huge companies needs and governments within troubled international finances. Mostly of 70$ barrel will not go to Arabians, but to Software, consultants, service companies, and so one. Mostly belongs to Europe and North America. This money will go to those countries and not to Sheiks. A minimal part that rests will be splited wihtin clans and perhaps will feed actual terrorism......

It isn't matter or politics but financial world. New rules where terrorism is just the side effect. (Like your finger hurts? cut the arm).

robin Hood was actually a terrorist organization. Robbed from the rich to give to the poor.
When the Americans rebelled against the British and threw the tea in the bay. That was a terrorist act.
But all of these and others before them had a solution.
Robin hood took over the government and the fighting stopped.
Same with when the Americans won the war with the British.
But these terrorists are different. Winning to them is not a solution. Before in history when you won the war the fighting stopped. But as we see in the horn of Africa.
this is a different kind of terrorist. There only solution lies in there group of Muslim still alive and everyone else dead.
There's is a fight to the death. When only there group of Muslim is still alive. Be it Hezbollah, in Lebanon, or Al quada in Iran and Afghanistan. Kony in Africa and then they will kill the others in those other places. Until only one remains alive and the world is vanquished. Never in history have we faced a terrorist organization like this where there is no solution.
So this is a new war like no other in history. Vic

Well the jews got their own country.
The modern State of Israel was founded by illegal jewish immigrants from Europe who formed terrorist gangs and attacked the British administrators of Palestine and the local population of christian and muslim arabs. They were so successful that the UN proposed a partition of Palestine to stop the bloodshed. Two days before this was due to happen in 1948 the jews declared the new State of Israel and seized power from the British. They attacked arabs and seized their land ,many were massacred and the rest fled to refugee camps in neighboring territories, where they have been ever since.
Many of these terrorists subsequently served in Israeli governments which always received unlimited support from the US government.

Hitler? Stalin? Genhis Khan? Caesar? Gandhi? Greenpeace?
at one point in Time were probably called terrorist by it's government or people.

Dealing with em now-a-days is hard..you have the A.C.L.U, United nation (they love to support Terrorism), Human right advocates, media, Democrats and other organization that loves to hide behind closed doors and talked of violation and such.
