I need to give my mom information about metal allergies. I want to get my ears pierced, and my mom knows its safe and everything - thats not a problem. She just doesnt want to let me because she is afraid of me having metal allergies.

Are metal allergies really bad?
Are the earrings they use to pierce your ears at Claire's quality?

Please tell me information or tell me some helpful websites. Thanks alot!

I don't know any websites but I have metal allergies and I can tell you that the earrings you want will be 100% nickel free. Most of the earrings at Claire's are nickel free because the starter earrings are either gold or silver plated. It's the earrings you buy after that that you have to look at the ingredients for. There are even some that are plastic coated now which makes it even easier to buy and wear earrings. It used to be that you could only buy expensive earrings to wear but prices have finally come down.

Please do not go to claires for any piercing, the jewelry there is of the lowest quality and aren't suitable for piercing. The butterfly back is a perfect are of bacteria to collect, and the post is to short to allow for swelling-among many other horrible problems. Also the piercing gun isn't going to be sterile, it's impossible to autoclave. Go to a piercing studio where they will be able to properly place your piercing, have more than 4 hours of training and can indepth discuss with you any metal allergies. If in doubt you can be pierced with titanium which is going to be the best option if your mother is so concerned.

I have that problem and finally found out I was allergic to nickel. Most cheap earrings contain nickel and I just will not wear them. I always wear real silver or real gold and never have a problem. However, there are several companies who sell nickel-free earrings which work just as well. (Don't waste your money on those cheap Claire's earrings unless they're guarantee nickel-free. You're asking for an infection if you do.) Here's one company that has a nice selection and you can also find nickel-free at Walmart.

You cant really go by the quality of a metal....because i have metal allergies and every metal such as gold and silver make me break out into rashes. My doctor told me to try Hydrocortizone 1% cream to surpress the itching and avoid wearing metals in the heat ...it can contribute and cdause the rash to appear and re-appear:)You could also try this site www.WebMD.com
