Earlier today I decided to help my cousin out at the restaurant. I took over as cashier for the day. When one of the customers approached to pay for this items. I rang him up and gave him his reciept. He mumbled something under his breath and I simply said excuse me. (I didnt say it in any rude way at all) he then replies in a loud tone " I said thank-you for the reciept, are you special or something" then he gave me a look of disgust. I was shocked because it was completely not expected. Which brings me back to my question why are some people rude when you are trying to be nice to them?

Because they are unhappy. Just continue to be nice, usually you win them over. I worked at a restaurant in Ohio. I was the only African American working there. This one Caucasian guy would come in there everyday and be rude to me. I would continue to treat him with respect. On a very busy day he clocked out on me. Cursed me out and everything. I held my tongue, handed him his tray and told him to enjoy his meal and have a nice day. The following day that man was so nice to me that every time I walked pass his table he would stop me to have a conversation and this continued until I quit the job. Kindness always wins them over.

Some people just take out their anger on who ever is handy at the time...you just happened to be handy. Hopefully when he's in a good mood one day, he'll do something extra nice for somebody. Don't take it personally. I mean, look at all of the people on Yahoo answers that are totally mean for no reason except for some weird power trip issue that they have. The way you conduct yourself is all that's important, because that's the only thing that you have control over in this whole world. So keep your head up!

It probably was, as others said, something else that happened to that person earlier in the day. It would be nice if people were more careful about their behavior, because of course that kind of behavior affects people the way that it affected you (I'd have felt the same way you did).

Of course it's also possible that he was just a moron.

Maybe the old guy was talking to himself about something he had to do next and you interupted his train of thought so he took it
out on you. Maybe your cousin didn't give him a receipt so this
was "special" Don't worry about the people who are mean just
keep being nice to people and you'll get enough people being nice back. Some people are mean to nice strangers as a defence mechanism because they don't want to be taken advantage of by someone who is just being nice.

Oh dear, that is life for you, its just unfortunate that you happen on the wrong side of the coin at that particular moment in time. That is what makes us human.

However, that guy may not be like that on normal days, he may be having a rough day and was just venting out on who ever comes his way not knowing his throwing around so mush annoyance in other peoples way. At the same time, it might be his usual behavoiur.

Remember, you can not please all humans, you must be prepared for such outburst, especially if you find urself in that kind of situation, that is at the cash point.

Sorry though, it was a rough one for you, I guess your cousin should enlighten you more on these type of issues. I guess if you ask him, he'll tell you he meets their kind every day.

I have been in the customer service buisness a long time and have seen more rude people than you can shake a stick at. You just have to develop a thick skin and smile.

People have a need for control, and in this verbal transaction, he wanted the upper hand.
By giving you the stare down, he got his point across.

pay no mind, and be glad you don't have to deal with the moronic, demanding, cry babyish, dramatic, whiny public any more than you have to.
I may sound bitter, but that's only because I AM.

Well sweetie it takes all kinds of people and I would suggest to you that when you are ringing them up make eye contact this way you dont get blown away by some nut who is having a bad day. Eye contact will let you know where they are.

I left a relationship because of that very thing; he became extremely hateful to me and I just could not take it any longer. Sure he had personal problems, but I didn't deserve to be mistreated by him, so I walked.
