I might add that I'm in Sydney. I'd be curious to know if the same rules apply elsewhere in Australia and the world.

Because trains don't stop and go like buses do. I think.

The answer, Goosmurf, takes us back to the late 1920's. To the tragic accident at Pinyon Canyon in Arizona. In those days, you could eat on buses. But on Saturday, September 23, 1927, a bus load of clowns from the Ringling Brothers/Barnum & Bailey Circus were riding over the Pinyon Canyon Bridge, eating their lunch on the bus, when one of them bit on the end of a hotdog andaccidently sent it shooting out of the bun and into the driver's right eye. In pain and surprise, the driver swerved and...you can imagine the rest. The canyon was splattered with clows. Only one survived, MoMo, and he only lived long enough to tell the police what happened. After this great tragedy, eating on buses was prohibited in 43 states. Why do I know this? Because MoMo was my great grandfather. We still have his picture in our house with his wonderful red nose and yellow hair. We keep his big shoes by the fireplace to this very day. And, believe it or not, we never eat hotdogs in my family!

yes it does it seems unfair if the trip is a long trip you should be able to eat on a bus.short trips I don't know why they do this. I am also an Aussie and don't travel much and if I do its a long trip for me. I guess because the bus can stop and you can eat someplace off the bus like McDonald's but a train you cant maybe this is the reason.

trains make you hungry, bus driver dont like cleaning their busses, your on a train for longer usually, and there's more chance you'll spill something on a bus

this is because riding on a train is much more stable and it doesent stop as much as the bus would,so resulting , it would be harder for food to fall.
