when a hurricane or tropical storm forms,
can't they send airplanes over it. and drop dry ice into it. making it drop all the water. before hitting the US.
do it over open water. not the islands.
would this work?
is there anything else that could be done? such as stoping the winds? besides moving people away from the coasts?

well doing research it seems like it has been done.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Stormfury

but due to lawsuits it has stopped.
but it did seem promising.
such as cutting down the hurrucane by 10%

well they have tried silver iodine to weaken the storm. thay can also put silver iodine in the air to make it rain where there has been severe drought in a specific area. anyways. it would weaken itn but the hurricane will still be destructive!

i was watching a special on the history channel on methods to weaken a hurrican and one of them was to drag ice bergs from the north and put them in the path so the awter would be cooler when the storm passed over the water. but that would take alot of effort the boat would travel to slow and the hurricane would travel to fast.

another experiment also going on is to make a soap/grease like film over the water where the hurricane is abotu to pass over the water so it would stop evaporation and the hurricane will weaken (much liek the same principal as if the hurricane was hitting land) there were some films invented but they dont last long enough

in the end you cant really sto mother nature and her destructive ways =p

hope this helps! =)

It is much more complicated than that. First, dry ice doesn't reliably cause rain to fall (in fact, there's some question as to whether it works at all); secondly, the overall area of a hurricane is so great, it would take more than all the dry ice in the world to even begin to cover this area; third, most of the damage from a hurricane comes from the wind, not from the water. The water causes flooding, but that can be overcome (if the foundation of the building in question is sound). The problem is making buildings strong enough to withstand the 150-250 MPH wind speed. It can be done (that's why the high-rises survive), but it would be prohibitively expensive. Want to spend some $1-2 million to make your 2000 square foot home hurricane-proof? It can be done, if you're really determined, and rich enough.
Also, the energy that is contained within a hurricane, even a small one, is much more than all the nuclear bombs in existence. So, if you bombed a hurricane (assuming the people would allow their politicians to approve the use of same, and the radioactive fallout, which would be spread all over the area of the hurricane, and make the area uninhabitable).
Stop the wind? Only if you know God personally, and are on good enough terms with Him to ask a favor.
Moving people away from the coasts is a good idea; you want to tell people where they can live? Go to Russia; and I still think Russians can live where they want, if they can find a job (or are rich enough) and live there. Where would they choose? Guess what---the Black Sea!!
In essence, man is a puny animal who has no chance, even with all his technology, against Mother Nature.

Well, for as start the winds would disperse the dry ice pretty quickly, even assuming they could get sufficent quantities anywhere near the eye of the storm. But what makes you think dry ice would make the storm "drop all the water" in the first place?

They've tried but it (seeding clouds) makes no noticeable difference. The amount of energy and water you're talking about in a hurricane is massive, far exceeding anything we're capable of generating.

Our best defense against hurricanes is to create wetland buffers between us and the hurricane, for every mile a hurricane must pass over land weakens it considerably.

Our second line of defense is to build structures that are capable of withstanding flooding and sustained high winds.

Other than that, till we harness the power of nature itself, we must concede victory to nature or stop building things in nature's path.

EDIT: added words for clarity

What you are talking about is a theoretical and logistical nightmare. You are talking millions of tons of "dry ice" which is really carbon dioxide. Talk about global warming! LOL
