i have had this happen to me before. let me guess your anti lock brake came on too. i dont know what trips the sensor, but something does. heres what i do, and it works every time. although the 3 or 4 times this has happend to me have been in the winter. its real simple, make sure no one is behind you, and your on a clear straight road. while driving, put the car in nutral, rev the engine, and turn the car off. then turn it on again real fast. that will reset the cpu, put not turn off your car, if you do it fast enough. rev it up to about 4k rpms, and be fast about it. turn the key left, then right, and thats it. all will be well.

other then this problem which doesnt happen too often, i have never had any issues with my 01 grand am. i love it.

hope it helps

Since your car still has low miles, it's probably something simple and won't cost much to fix. My grand am gt's service engine light came on once because of a bad sensor in the gas tank. It only costed about a hundred dollars for a new one but my warranty paid it. I would take it to a gm dealer for a maintenance check up.

No offense, but you should seriously consider getting an entirely different car. Grand Am's are NOT reliable cars, cosmetically and mechanically. It WILL start falling apart, literally, within the next few years, if not already. If you're fixed on one of the pontiac's, get a Grand Prix, which is a reliable car, but can develop a very loud exhaust. A newer GTP would be a nice one to have, if you want power.

Could be lots of thing, but more likely that your engine needs some simple general tune up maintenance.Take it to an Auto Zone, or other such car parts store, the should be able to plug in a diagnostic hand held computer and tell what the problem is.

Maybe sensor failing, maybe control computer hiccuped -- GM, man. Almost anything electronic can send a fault code and cause lamp to come on. Try disconnecting battery cable for about five min. then reconnect. It's a patch at best but may clear code for awhile.

that light indicates that there is either a problem in the wiring or your car has some motor damage . the sooner you get it to the mechanic the better, and the less it will end up costing you in the long run.

ignore the crow, they are not a bad car if u don't mind a few squeaks and rattles.
as for ur ? it could be a number of things and cost depends on what is wrong. plan on spending at lest $75 to have them look at it and then whatever is wrong.

could simply be a malfunctioning fuse or something more serious. go and get it checked out, not serviced and see what the problem is. could be spark plugs could be transmission oriented. only real way to find out is head over to the repair shop. go to the dealership for the check up, but go somewhere esle to get it fixed.

there is a wire at the fuel tank that gets broken from being too tight this is the most likely cause.
