Really? They put that in your homework? That's a terribly worded question. The answer they're looking for is 375, but it's wrong. When you're old enough to drive, you'll run out of gas trying to do the math that way. MPG (Miles per Gallon) isn't a direct proportion, but changes as the engine heats up, varies with speed, and weight in the car. For example, the weight of the extra 8 gallons of gas will bring down the MPG slightly. Driving 10 MPH will give you much worse MPG than driving 55 MPH. What a horrible question, for teaching you one thing, while misleading you on another. Who's the publisher of your textbook?

Assuming the consumption of the gas is linear, you know that
the car's mileage is 175 mi/7 gal = 25 miles/gal
so if you now have 15 gal.
(25 mi/gal)*(15 gal) = 375 miles

But can they AFFORD the 15 gallons of gas?
They could go much further in a Honda Civic Hybrid.
Why waste your time on 25mpg??? Get a 50mpg vehicle and go 375 miles using 1/2 the gas!!

Miles per gallon = miles / gallons
175 / 7 = 25 mpg
25 * 15 = 375
(edit: sorry for the dyslexia, got the numbers backwards the first time--fixed now)

175/7 = x/15
divide 175 by 7, and you get 25
25 = x/15
multiply both sides by 25
375 = x
375 miles!

375 miles
It gets 25 m(iles) p(er) g(allon)
25=175miles / 7 gallons
thus, 15 gallons will get you 15*25 miles (=375)
