I am a new resident to NY. Today, I was pulled over for going 80 in a 65mph zone on the thruway. The cop gave me a ticket for disobeying a traffice device. Is this better than a speeding ticket? Any idea what the fine is? How does NY work, is it on a point system with your drivers license? Any info would be great!

That citation falls under such an ambiguous category, since "disobeying a traffic device" can mean failing to stop completely at a stop sign, not following emergency road instructions, and (I believe) not following the posted speed limit. I received a lot of these when I lived in NY for 6 years. It is on a point system with your drivers license, and also applies to points received in PA and NJ (I don't remember if MA is also included). You can have the points be made "invisible" by attending traffic school.

Hell yeah, you got off lucky! In NY if you are 10 mph over the speed limit (and given a speeding ticket) you WILL get charged with reckless driving and possibly even reckless endangerment. You got off lucky.

YES.

This means you are only paying a minor traffic fine, i's quite similar to NJ, udk about points, but it wont go on your insuance cause it's the equivalent of a parking ticket.

The cop let you off easy.
I have allot of friends who are cops in NY, and if you are cool to them, they generally will lower your charges.
Get a lawyer. You can get it reduced to a loud muffler or something, pay a fine and be on your merry way!
