if the symbol looks like an E..then it means 8 is an elemt of the set 7,8,9. i.e. belongs to that set

if the symbol looks like a 90 degree 'u' then it means 8 is a subset of the set 7,8,9 i.e. is a member of the set.

is that symbol more like an E just with a lot of curves or more like < with a line under it?

the E thing means that 8 is part of the group of numbers on the right. (6 for example is not in that group, it's not "E"lement of that group)
if it's the other symbol it just means the 8 is equivalent and/or smaller than the numbers on the right
