If it isn't an ice skating car / robot then it is a city folding up into pieces on a mobile phone advert. Is it a good thing or a bad thing?

It covers up the fact that they are now a whisker away from outright lying to you.

There'll come a day when the advertising firms won't even bother to keep things under restraint. They'll be so desperate to grab your attention that they'll spend millions on kamikaze adverts: ads so shocking that they'll only ever be shown once, twice maybe if they can get away with it. Ads /designed/ to be shown once, and hopefully someone will have had the VCR running at the time.

During those ads, anything will go. Absolutely anything. Provided the audience isn't too stunned, after watching a stream of atrocity, to not remember what it was they were advertising in the first place.

I've seen ads skirting this fine line before; ads for Wonderbras showing a woman in a bar with her breasts exposed (everyone else was properly clad), men coughing up dogs, all sorts of shocking SFX.

It is getting worse, and one day they will deliberately go too far. There'll be a line crossed, and from that point ... it scarcely bears thinking about.

Alot of adverts do seem to be very overdone these days, even smaller companies are spending huge amounts on advertising! It just reflects how competitive the market it at the moment. I'm not sure its a good thing as companies seem to put alot of effort into gaining new customers but then they can't sustain them.

Television is a visual medium, therefore it makes sense to have as much visual stimulation as possible, to make the best and most effective use possible of tv as an advertising medium

I think it's just a case of advertising keeping up to date with the latest special effects and technology. I do think that some ads are cheesy though!

Many are so entertaining that even after watching them I haven't registered what they are advertising.
