Well, as long as you stay in Austin you should be fine. But if you travel outside of the city limits, make sure your car's in good working order. Last thing you need is to break down along some desolate highway & have some bigot come along & see your gay stickers.
Incidentally, I had all kinds of treehugger bumper stickers on my car when I lived in Humboldt County (Northern California). They were PC stickers - that is, unless I were filling up for gas in Scotia or Rio Dell, which happen to be big timber towns, then I'd get a lot of really nasty looks.
But who cares how people look at you - the big concern should be making sure they never corner you when nobody's looking.

I have to say that seeing an HRC sticker as I'm driving never fails to make my day. Keep up the good work my man! And as for people saying that straight people don't advertise their orientation, that's because they don't have to...in our society you're straight until you demonstrate otherwise. So congrats on having the balls to tell the world who you are and what you believe in. Maybe you'll change a few minds along the way.

I am a lesbian and I do not find them tasteful, I am actually quite sick of gays and lesbians advertising their orientation in a such a way that they feel it makes them special. When people see the equal rights sign it is meaningless to them unless they know the gay people personally. The only real way change will ever be made is by natural integration with straight people in work or social environments and they get to know us as real people. Passing by us on the road and observing our stickers on our car is not exactly provoking thought in people who have little or no contact with anyone who is gay. Let go of the whole idea that your sexual orientation is a personality trait. I makes us neither unique or special. I have a very Christian boss who was formerly very uncomfortable around lesbians due to her beliefs and some other reasons. We are now friends who socialize on a regular basis, talk about her crushes on guys, ect. She just eventually realized I'm a caring good hearted person just like everyone else we work with. This was made possible just by me being honest about my orientation at work and by time and trust. Not by me wearing gay rights T-shirts and stickers and banners.

Unfortunately there are some parts of this great country where open display- no matter what it is-of homosexuality is reason enough for unlearned people to try and make your life miserable. Gay or lesbian stickers in some parts of the south can make your vehicle fair game for crazy, ignorant, unlearned people. Sorry!

I think that anyone should put whatever the hell they want on their car. People advertise their religion, their sense of humor, their political affiliation, their social opinions, and (yes) their sexual orientation on cars. But I don't see why anyone would care so much about what other people have on their cars. I can put up a pride strip or a sushi fish or a wiccan pentacle or a faded Kerry/Edwards sticker, and it doesn't hurt anyone else.

I think if you already have stickers that say Jesus would slap the **** out of you, the question of the sticker being inappropriate is kind of silly. If you are gay and proud do what you want. Love your friends but follow your inner voice.

This is a great question. I am straight, but if I wasn't I would not put that sticker on my car. I agree with the poster that asked why people have to go out of their way to show they are guy but want to be accepted. I don't see any "straight" people showing pride etc... Be you, be cool and live life, being gay isn't the only thing going on in your life.
In addition why put up with the hassle of having people always looking at you with that sticker on your car?

A lot of people in my town display their pride. On my jeep I have a sticker in the back saying "we are every where" one saying "equal rights" a squiggly rainbow sticker, and a bumper sticker that says, "women make great leaders; you're following one.
Then on the front of my jeep I have one of those skinny rainbow line sticker underneath where it says jeep. I haven't had any negative experiences from having them.

Why do homosexuals plead, beg and get angered over the idea they they are not being "accepted" by society, yet feel the need to distinguish themselves from the norm - at the same time? It makes no sense to me. I grew up in L.A., where they have the infamous Gay Pride Festival/Parade in West L.A. every year - here are all these people that want to be respected and fit in, but then they go out and act like teenagers in sexual overdrive on top of floats and in the streets! Whatever. I believe stickers are just another form of those parades.
