I've been a large fan of all of the movies and very recently I have started to go through the books. I have just started The Goblet of Fire. So far i must say that the books do provide more detail as all books do. However, i must commend the film-makers because so far they seem to be doing a fabulous job at recreating the story from the books. I was pretty astonished at just how much they were similar. I normally make a habit of reading the books to movies I like. Sometimes to get more info, and sometimes to find contrast between the two. Alas, so far i would have to say that the Harry Potter adaptations seems to be the most similar. In any events I am really looking forward to both, the books i haven't read yet and the movies that haven't been made yet.
P.S. I have also heard that because of the thickness of Order of the Phoenix and Half Blood Prince, in order to keep up with making the movies as similar to the books as possible the film-makers are considering making each into 2 movies and have them come out in a manner similar to kill bill vol 1 & 2.

They go hand in hand, but in a parasitic way, the movie can't survive without the book. I was very pleased just reading the books, they were very good. It was also a pleasure to see it re-made on the silver screen. The only problem is they're so long that you can't have the whole story in the movie, so if you're going to watch the movie you really should read the book first.
