My teacher is always saying how we should have a thesis statement but I never seem to get it. I am writing an essay on Two Kinds by Amy Tan, and i'm not sure what the thesis statement should be.

A thesis statement is basically what you're going to write about, and the argument you're going to prove. It generally is the most difficult part of the paper, along with the intro, but once you have it written, you're good to go. If you'd like some help, i'd be happy to help you along. I have an English degree, so I have written a ton of thesis sentences (unfortunately). lol My e-mail is purensimple24@yahoo.com. Feel free to contact me! :)

OK, here we go.
A thesis statement is simply a one-sentence summary of the main idea of your paper.
For instance, suppose you have to write a paper on how to clean a room. You could say, "This paper will tell you how to clean a room." That's an announcement, not a thesis. Bad idea.
Instead, organize your paper around one main idea:
"Cleaning a room is simple once you get organized."
"Cleaning a room to music can be fun."
In both cases, you take the reader through the steps, but with an organizing principle in mind. Carry the thesis idea throughout. Can you dance with the broom? Can you swing a dustcloth to a reggae beat?

Your Amy Tan assignment is too vague for me to make suggestions, but pick an idea you want to discuss and summarize it in a sentence in the introductory paragraph. For instance (I'm making this up):
"Amy Tan is expert at character development. Throughout the novel we see her characters grow and change. She does this, not by telling or describing, but by SHOWING us through their behavior how her characters evolve through the course of the story." (The last sentence is your thesis statement.) The body of your paper will give examples to support the thesis.

Hope this was helpful!
