He was a German Jew. Judaism is a religion and Germany is a country. Because of the Nuremberg Laws, he was not given the rights of most Germans, but he was a Jew that was born and raised in Germany.

OF COURSE you can be both. Being Jewish does not restrict you to one nationality. The Jews the Nazi's went after first were the
GERMAN JEWS. Then they started going after the Jews in all the other countries they were busy conquering, like France, Poland, etc.

In fact, many Germans were Jewish. That is why Hitler wanted to exterminate them - to make Germany a single race and creed. German Jews were the first in the concentration camps.
Einstein was a German and he was of Jewish decent, however he did not practice the religion and neither did his parents, neither did he support the German Holocaust efforts.

Being German means a citizen of Germany. Being Jewish is like saying one is Christian - it is a faith. People get confused because the Jews are together, united like a nation so as a result of their faith have become a nation (and actually are, they are called the Nation of Israel, etc.) So you can be both. There are Jewish Americans, Canadians, Israelis, Chinese (yes!), Brazilians, Africans, Australians, etc.........

If you "know that he can't be both" then I suggest you take whoever taught you that "fact" out behind the bicycle shed and give them a sound thrashing for being so stupid!
What nationality did you think the Jews were that Hitler was trying so hard to eliminate? Did you think he started his career by trying to kill the neighbors?

What do you mean "i know he cant [sic] be both"? He was. Why's that so impossible? Do you think the Jews cleansed themselves out of Germany before Hitler got the chance to?

Yes he was both:
He was born in Germany--he was a German citizen until 1896. Later in life he was also a Swiss, Prussian, and American citizen. When he died he was both a Swiss and American Citizen.
He was also Jewish--that was his religion.
