Earth's rotation around the sun and it's rotation on its own axis are the reason we have day and night.
The earth rotates on its own axis once every 24 hours (a day) while it orbits the sun (one complete orbit per 365 days or per year). The part of the earth that is "facing" the sun expreiences daytime while the half of the earth turned away from the sun experiences night.

Astronomy was first studied by ancient Egyptians in their exploration of the moon, stars, and other objects in space. The ancient Egyptians were the first explorers to find out what causes day and night. They studied how the sun and moon traveled across the sky by observing their different movements. The early astronomers discovered that the Earth contains an imaginary line, called an axis, that passes through the center of the Earth. This axis also passes between the North and South Poles. When the Earth spins on its axis, it is known as rotation. This rotation on the axis is what causes day and night. When the Earth rotates eastward, the sun looks as though it is moving west. When the Earth is facing the sun, it is daytime. As the Earth turns to the east, it appears as though the sun is setting in the west. Night exists when the Earth faces away from the sun. Each rotation on the Earthís axis takes about twenty-four hours to complete. This twenty-four hour cycle includes both day and night, and is referred to as one day.

The earth rotates on an axis, so when the sun beams light on the earth it hits different parts of it, causing night and day. Imagine it like this if you live in florida, it would be night in,say, the middle east, because it is on the other side of the globe.
