This is the place to take him - he will be so jazzed! I love this place - I'm married to an Italian and he swears by it! Wish we could go to!
The four star rated, family owned La Pastaia Restaurant continually delights Bay Area diners with it's Contemporary Italian cuisine and metropolitan ambience. Located in the breathtaking, art deco, boutiuqe Hotel De Anza, La Pastaia is just minutes away from the San Jose International Airport, and walking distance to the Arena, Center for Performing Arts, the Tech Museum and the Convention Center.

I've eaten at La Pastaia and Maggio's. Nothing to write home about.
Palermo's is better. It has southern/Sicilian style Italian food, as well as a nice atmosphere.

Bella Mia is also OK, but it is more of a Californian style of Italian. But it is good.

I really like Nick's (354 E Santa Clara St.) It an odd little place, but the ravioli is great. I recommend the pasta dishes over anything else. Don't be put off by the stale garlic bread - the pasta is Great!
I also like Original Joe's, but it's kinda overpriced.
DiCeccos's on Bascom (not the one in Santa Clara!) is pretty good too.
All these places are "Italian-American" with their emphasis on rich sauce and ubiquitous eggplant parm, but they are tasty.
71 St. Peter on San Pedro has some Italian selections, and is a nice place to eat.
Finally, The Naglee Park Garage is just a good restaurant, tucked away next to a 7-11 on 11th St, near SJSU. Not italian, though :)

Maggiano's Little Italy on Santana Row, across the street from Valley Fair Mall. The environment of Santana Row is nice, not to mention the food at Maggiano's is DELICIOUS! I recommend ALL the classics, and the scallops are especially good. Enjoy!

Original Joe's is definitely worth considering. Tuxedoed waiters set the mood for a "scene from the Godfather" type night. Huge portions. I love the raviolis and oddly, the grilled hamburger steak.

I think you'd be better off driving the 50 miles to San Francisco's little Italy neighborhood.

Frankie, Johnnie & Luigi too (On Prospect)
or a little fancier - Nicolino's (technically in Sunnyvale but near Mission College).

I like Bella Vita in downtown Los Altos. It's made fresh and melts in your mouth. Made by "real" Italians.
