When you say soda, I assume that you mean coke & pepsi. With that in mind, a penny will not disolve in soda, but the grime on it will be cleaned up. Maybe that's why it seems to dissolve. Plastics do not dissolve in soda, or they would not package them in it.

That's totally not true. Leave a penny in soda a couple of days, the penny will be clean but that's about it. (I have tried it ) There is not enough carbon/acid in the cola to DISOLVE the penny. I dont know about plastics but I doubt they would disolve either. Why dont you try it? You could be your own MYTHBUSTER...let us know what happens.

the worst it will do is shine the penny up. i wouldn't drink after that. and plastic is something soda is bottled in so it isn't dissolved into soda.

Pennies won't. I tried that one for 2 weeks, It just came out clean. Plasic won't because it's usually bottled it it. Try a dry ice bomb and a mentos/diet coke bomb for experimenting. Thats way fun but very dangerous.
