I recently shipped an item, which I packed myself, though I was told to let someone pack it professionally but I didn't want to pay for the extra expense. Well, the package arrived damaged and the claim I filed was not approved because of insufficient packing even though I bought insurance. Can I sue to get my money for the damage?

No, if you signed a release of liability you don't have a leg to stand on. Signing a release of liability excuses the company from any damages that occur. You should have let them pack it.
