A modern ballgown.
There will be dancing so be sure it covers your knees.
& make sure to get comftorble shoes not high heels!
Your feet will be in a lot of pain
if your heels are higher then 4 inches.
Windsor Fashions has a plethora of Nice ball gowns & coctail dresses. Just ask a lady who works there the same exact question.Although some coctail dresses are to "skimpy" be careful, you don't want to be tugging at your dress (everyone will see it & you'll end up looking insecure)
Just try on lots of styles & colors
& wear whatever you are most comfortable in.

A nice skirt or dress that doesn't look like you're going to a club, but is tasteful and pretty (ie black skirt near knees with a light blue blouse and heels)

Cocktail dress... not necessarily a ball gown but maybe a tea-length or short fancy dress like this: http://www.jessicamcclintock.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&productId=99330&categoryId=10015&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=10102
