put loads of sunscreen in the water around you. Sharks can smell and they hate the smell of sunscreen. In most shark attacks the person is not consumed, just part of them. That is due, in part to how much lotion they have on there bodies. The shark takes a bite and hates it.
So if you see a shark in the water nearby dump all your sunscreen in the water and then churn the water up (you will most likely be doing this because of panic anyway)
make sure you scream for help and don't try the whole punch it in the nose thing, I promise the shark will react faster than you can and a punch underwater is not-very effective.

The most sensitive part are the gills. Claw against the gills and hopefully it will go away. (Be warned that the scales of the shark are quite sharp and may cut if you go against the grain. But rather have a scraped hand than being dead!)

hit the gill or eye as hard as u can
and the best way to not be attacked do not swim in mercy water
do not swim during cloudy weather or near or around a reef

Have an orca with you. The orca will eat the shark. Or a dolphin will ram it in the gills with its rostrum.

Punching or gouging it's eyes, and tearing at it's gills. The nose isn't that sensitive, contrary to popular belief.

You won't defeat it. But if it approaches, back hunched, use your feet to discourage it with a kick.

Gouging out it's eyes or punching it in the head right between its nose and eyes as hard as you could.
