Academic writing revolves less around the plot or summary and strives more to analyze the text.

It's a style. Academic writing will often have an abstract at the beginning and a bibliography at the end and usually footnotes [1]. The big difference is that you back up what you are writing about with other evidence and authorities rather than offer unsubstantiated opinions.

Your writing should be structured, have a definite introduction and each paragraph should cover one main subject.

An academic essay should have a definitive conclusion which offers a summary of the arguments developed.

A few pointers for you there.

The exact meaning of the words mention by you are :-

1. Academic writing: observations and writing pertaining to areas of particulars study that are not primarily vocational or applied, as the humanities or pure mathematics

2. Summary: - a comprehensive and usually brief abstract, recapitulation, or compendium of previously stated facts or statements.

3. Conclusion: the last main division of a discourse or writing, usually containing a summing up of the points and a statement of opinion or decisions reached

Actually there no much difference between summary and conclusion excepting conclusion contains the final impression or statement, where summing up all the events like in summary is not necessary.

Academic writing is how higher education students would be expected to complete essays, thesis etc. Usually written in a formal reported form, it would have supporting evidence for any statements/arguements made and would probably use references to quotes, other authors' work etc and would have a bibliography showing where information was drawn from. Hope this helps!

A summary is the main points of the piece with minimum description. A conclusion is the summing up at the end of a piece.

Most of the answers so far have given a reasonable definition for academic writing (a argument or proposal written by scholars for scholars in a style that is clear and precise) but I would say that a summary is the article reduced to a brief statement and the conclusion is what the author believes is the answer to the argument they proposed

Just a few addendum to what's already written :

Academic writing must be robust and sustain criticism. Academic debates form the basis of proposing an idea, presenting the evidence for and against that idea, summarising the merits / disadvantages of both, and then reaching a conclusion as to which is on balance more likely to be correct. The style of writing tends to hypothesise about something, present the evidence in support of that hypothesis, and then put it out there for other academics to rip to shreds and propose alternate hypotheses / critiques. Summaries in academic writing tend to be 'literature reviews' ie a statement of all the already existing body of knowledge on a given topic, whilst a conclusion is typically likely to contain a direction for future research, any areas which either don't stand up to scrutiny or require additional work, or in the rarest of occasions a definite statement in favour of one body of research (school of thought) over another.

The referencing system of footnotes incidentally is more frequently used in physical sciences. Social scientists more commonly adopt the harvard referencing system, putting a bibliography of their sources at the end of their paper.

If you were attempting to win an argument in a pub you could say things like "stands to reason", or "everyone knows it the case that...." and then make the most wild or outlandish claim with no backing whatsoever. Academics ground everything they write in evidence, either from their own research or from previously published work written by others. Academic writing seeks also to advance the edges of human knowledge. PhD Theses for example are a genuine original contribution to human knowledge.

as far as i see it, academic writing is a piece of writing that confroms to educational guidelines, such as an essay or a dissertation.
the difference between a summary and a conclusion is that a summary is (mainly) written in the body of the introduction of the essay. this is where you take an area of a subject and elaborate it on it, particularly in making comparisons with another example
whilst the conclusion is where you summarise the main points of the essay or argument, offer other suggestions if neccessary and if possible come up with a legitimate answer to the question

Academic writing is writing you do for school work. It's not informal like an email you send your friend or something. I don't know what summary or conclusion writing are.

Basically, academic requires you to give a considered response to the question. for example, you should look at both arguements to a question. think about which side you support and then find works to help stenthen your arguement. also you use footnotes and a bibliography. there are some really good examples given by previous answerers
