Just about any volcanic eruption is more powerful than the a-bomb in hiroshima. The most famous/devastating are:
Thera in the Greek islands about 1200 BCE. Probably the reality behind the Atlantis myth.
Vesuvius outside Pompeii in the first century AD. Buried Pompeii and Herculaneum in Roman Italy.
Krakatoa in the south pacific in the 1800's. Several cubic miles were blown into the atmosphere.

Krakatoa. When it blew, it took the entire island, darkened the skies around the world and caused a drop in global temperatures, among other things. I'm sure there are many volcanic eruptions that were more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb, but this is the one that comes to mind immediately.

You're probably thinking of Mt. Vesuvius, which destroyed the ancient Italian city of Pompeii when it errupted in 79 AD.
