New DVDs and CDs are released early in the week (Monday or Tuesday), so that they have a whole week to sell them before the numbers come out. If they came out on Friday, then the people that were in the store on Tuesday and Wednesay wouldn't be able to buy them and those are sales that won't show up on the charts.
They compile the numbers on Monday.
