There was a special on the TV Guide channel about why good and highly acclaimed shows got cancelled with a cliffhanger. Take Surface and Invasion for an example. They both ended with a cliffhanger. Both shows got high ratings. But before their season ended with the network announcement of a new fall schedule, in commericals it was a season finale, when in reality, it's series finale. And those shows ended with a cliffhanger. If a show gets a pink slip before May like in April for taping, it should end with closure, not a cliffhanger. It's misleading and false advertising in a way. Take Commander in Chief. It started off well and tanked after a break, due to a new day and time. Its ending the series with a TV Movie. Deadwood after 3 yrs is doing 2 TV movies. So kudos to them. The only exception is 7th Heaven. It ended on the WB as a series finale; but one week after it ended, it was picked up by CW with 13 episodes. No series finale, but season finale. Sabrina was another one. Opines?

The decision to cancel a show frequently happens after a season has been taped - so that the producer/director frequently doesn't know when he/she is filming that last episode, that it will be the end of the series, and not just the season. So the final episode is frequently a cliffhanger for the next season and then, oops, it is not on again.

It is the nature of the business, in part at least because usually the network that is airing the show is not the same entity as the studio that produced it.

When Joss Whedon's "Angel" went off the air a couple of years ago, WB - the network that carried the show - told Whedon before he finished filming Season 5 (20th Century/Fox was the studio) that the network wasn't going to renew the show. This gave Whedon five episodes (rapidly designed, written, and produced) to close the "Angel" storylines. WB did it as a courtesy to Whedon.

Note that Deadwood was actually cancelled, with no plans for the movies, after Season 3 had been filmed but before it was being aired. Milch and HBO were planning on a Season 4, but couldn't come to terms. In other words, the episode we saw on Sunday would have been the end of the series. But they agreed in June - after Season 3 had started, I believe - to do the movies.

I hate that! But what I also hate is when a good show has a very disapointing cliffhanger like Grey's Anatomy for example I thought they could do better but it was an ok cliffhanger just not the best Desparte Housewives had a great cliffhanger although after each episode they have a mini one after each episode that is really good!

So I resorted into studying the manga. >>l. a. Corda D'Oro - dammit they could make a 2d season!!! and who provides a damn about secondo passo? it became the type of cliffhanger TT^TT >>Soul Eater - i desire extra of it. i imagine the anime did not have that a lot of a good closure. >>Kuroshitsuji - why does Ciel favor to die? And what the hell is with the 2d season of Kuro (frequently stated as Monoshitsuji)?! Seb and Ciel are replaced!!!! Arrrrggghhhh!!! >>Ouran - fairly a lot wrapped up contained in the anime. yet there are extra adventures contained in the manga which could be became into anime... hmft... >>Vampire Knight - every person the following who's conscious of if there'll be a third season? not anybody is so industrious in studying manga!!! >>Prince of Tennis - oh properly... With those bazillion type of episodes, they did not made countless the chapters contained in the manga into an ova!!! properly then... i wager this is all... XDXD

sometimes they aren't given time to do a wrap up. Farscape is a classic example. If you want closure get people to inform the networks that you won't tolirate just ending it.Maybe they will do a movie, otherwise they won't invest anymore time in it.

they end in cliffhangers so that you get excited to see how they would get resolved, both invasion and surface had no idea that they were getting cancelled otherwise tehy would have ended differently
