because the roots of the words have meanings:

homo = same
hetero = different

homosexual = same sex
heterosexual = different sex

why is this so hard to grasp?

Hetero means different and homo means the same. In terms of genetics (like eye color) someone who is heterozygous will have two different color genes and someone who is homozygous will have two genes of the same color. Likewise a heterosexual couple is made up of two different genders and a homosexual couple is two people of the same gender. How does that not make sense?

here's the medical definition...
Heterosexual: A person sexually attracted to persons of the opposite sex. Or a person who has sexual relations with the opposite sex. Colloquially known as "straight."

"Homo-" means same, so a homosexual is attracted to members of the same sex.

"Hetero-" means different, so a heterosexual is attracted to members of the opposite sex.

"Bi-" means two, so a bisexual is attracted to members of both sexes.
