Detergent oil is the recommended oil by Ford for this car. If you are dealing with an old high mileage car with a lot of engine wear, then some people use non-detergent oil to try and create carbon and sludge buildup thinking that it will retard oil consumption. One the detergent has acted on the sludge it is unlikely that it will return just by changing back to non-detergent oil. I think the reality is that you need an engine overhaul.

ALL!!!!! modern engine oils contain detergents..... (except the cheap non detergent crud I hope soon is not made anymore) It sounds like (if you switched brands) its the brand (some brands oils are thicker or thinner in they're oil weights, one may be a low 30 weight, other a high)

Try a high mileage oil next time, if no, try a 10w-40 or 10w-40 high mileage oil.
Btw, that no smoke crud just thickens the oil....., if your gonna get rid of it it, dump some 20w-50 in it.
