"Please excuse my dear Aunty Sally" is an acronym created to help students remember the order of operations in algebraic problems.

P- Parentheses
E- Exponents
M- Multiply
D- Divide
A- Addition
S- Subtraction

For example we want to simplify the following expression:

-1*(2-1) + (3+5)^2

Step 1: Solve the inside of the parentheses:
-1*(1) + (8)^2

Step 2: Solve the part of the expression with exponents
-1*(1) + 64

Step 3: Multiply
-1 + 64

Step 4: Add
63
