I'm trying to get back into reading(it's been about 5 years since I picked up a book) And every book store I've been to only seems to have books that are either sex and the city rip offs, harry potter rip offs or really bad vampire novels.
I want modern fiction that will make you think and entertain. something with a fresh story.(sorry if that sounds corny but thats what I want)

Dan brown..he wrote Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons...They are both set in modern day and move at break neck speed....they take place in alil over a 24 hour period each...if that.

they have been hyped up but they are awesome. Read them in order..."Angels and Demons" then the "Da Vinci Code"

they are not hard to follow...but they do make you think...and they are pure fiction...and do not be afraid, they are not anti-christian..I am a christian thru and thru and I didn't feel my faith rocked in the slightest.

you will not be disappointed.

Rather than go for Oprah's choice, one should research some grown-up book prizes - The Booker Prize (Man Booker and Woman Booker) The Orange Prize for fiction are big over here.

Check out Zadie Smith, Ian McEwan, Chuck Palaniuk, Michel Houllebecq, Paul Auster, Don DeLillo, Haruki Murakami, Kurt Vonnegut, . There is amazing new stuff out there.

Or try some not-too-old classics - Albert Camus, Kafka, Conrad, Kundera, Perec, Nabakov

PS. Dan Brown's writing is widely known (in intelligent circles) to be ****-dribble

There is a huge difference between great fiction and best sellers.

Best sellers are written for about a third to fifth grade reading level. They lack any real depth and they don't usually offer any new ideas. They are like television shows on paper.

I suggest you read some real classic fiction. Get used to really good writing. Books you have to think about while you read, pages that don't turn quickly, that you have to savor.

Try Mark Twain. It could change your life. I'm serious.

Other than the great authors already mentioned, you might try Janet Evanovich for something a bit lighter without giving up to many IQ points, or there is the tried and true, Dean Koontz, he only gets better with age.

Timequake by Kurt Vonnegut. Or any book by Vonnegut for that matter (some may not fall into your timeline however). He writes what I consider satire - with a slant you will fin NO WHERE ELSE. If you have never read any of his books you have to give him a try!

Well, back to the basic stuff. Have you read The moon and the Sixpence by Maugham, is great. It is about an office guy that disappears and goes out to find his living, his real living by painting. Is Gauguin life.

Do you like classics? Lite SciFi, very good reading, ahead of it's time. Robert Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land".
If you like a series, read Anne McCaffrey, "Dragon Riders of Pern" series.

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card - science fiction.
Dirk Pitt stories by Clive Cussler are good, too.

If you like fantasy, give King Fortis the Brave a try. One of my favorite books.

I also agree with universitymo ... Anything by Mark Twain is great.
