Let me begin by addressing some other answers.
johncondo2001: I’m not really sure what the fact that you’re Catholic adds to the conversation. You provided no additional reason for hating ND, suggesting that being Catholic is enough. This of course is false seeing as how I am Catholic and love Notre Dame, but look, I still haven’t answered the question.

DJ: you could say the exact same thing about just about any team’s fans, though there are few that really deserve it. Do you regard the Cameron Crazies as “loud and obnoxious and arrogant”? How about fans from Texas, Ohio St., Michigan, Wisconsin, Miami, or any SEC school? As far as the mascot (and this one’s for Jane B as well), to call it racist is just plain dumb. How many people out there are actually offended by the leprechaun? Or even Indian mascots for that matter? Would you like to know? The Pew Research Group conducted a survey in 2002 that found that 83% of Native Americans thought the Washington Redskins’ logo to be innocuous and harmless. I have never in my life met anyone who was pissed off by the leprechaun motto. Are these same people also offended by the Boston Celtics’ logo?

I think irishfan46241 summed it up nicely on both counts. Notre Dame haters are largely jealous of all the attention that ND receives. Justified or not, the reason Notre Dame gets so much attention is basic supply and demand. People across the country want to watch the Irish, therefore NBC pays the university a lot of money to televise the games. Like or not, that is the simple reality.

mike: your answer is so poor, it’s difficult for me to know how to tackle it, but I’ll start from the beginning and work my way down.

“I hate Notre Dame b/c all thoughout [sic] the 90's we've been force fed a horrible product of football just because they have that damn national T.V. contract that never seems to expire.” --Well, actually, no one was forcing you to watch NBC. You could have switched to ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, CSTV, FSN, or any of the other myriad sports channels out there. As for that TV contract, either try reading and economics textbook or refer to what I said above.-- “They play maybe 2 teams all season every season worth mentioning” --Hmmm, and that’s why everybody said they would start off 0-6 last year? Because #1 USC, #2 Tennessee, #3 Michigan, nationally ranked, Pittsburgh and Purdue, along with Michigan St. weren’t “worth mentioning”? What do you think about this year’s lineup of Georgia Tech, Penn St., Michigan, Michigan St., Purdue, UCLA, USC? Anybody “worth mentioning” in there?-- “Their [sic] not even in a major collegiate division.” --It’s called Division I-A, which, as I recall, is THE major collegiate division. Oh, maybe you mean a conference? About that one, go back to my lesson on supply and demand. Then look at the Big East for football this year and try telling me with a straight face that West Virginia plays a harder schedule just because they’re in a BCS conference.-- “When they beat somebody that really matters and does so consistently, I will give them do respect” --Beat the winningest I-A football program of all time (Michigan) each of the past two years when the Wolverines were ranked in the Top 10; beat Tennessee (who was the SEC runner-up in 2004) each of the past two years…

I think that about sums it up. Generally speaking though, most answers are the same: jealousy, ignorance, that sort of thing. A good-natured rivalry-type ‘hatred’ (a la USC or Michigan) I can understand. Notre Dame is also unique in that addition to being the #2 in terms of all-time winning percentage, it is also one of only two Catholic schools in Division I-A, as well as one of the top academic institutions in the country. National following, powerhouse football team, actively Catholic, academically elite university…yep, that’s a lot to be jealous of.

I'm of Irish descent and I love Notre Dame... I'm not sure what the guy is talking about when he says they use a racist mascot, it's a leprachaun man.... now, if the mascot was the hunchback of Notre Dame, well, then we'd have a problem.

Its because of the percieved media bias. They can say its the mascot they can say its because they are ranked higher than they should be, it all boils down to their team doesnt get 1/16 of the attention Notre Dame does and they are jealous. Mascots please come up with something better than that. My mom is Irish and my dad is Native American I havent found a mascot yet that is offensive except for "the nads". Go cry to the ACLU.

People really don't hate the team, they just hate Notre Dame fans. Loud and obnoxious and arrogant is their reputation.

The ND team also uses a RACIST image as their mascot which pisses a lot of people off.

Also, we get disgusted when ND gets ranked 10 places higher than they should be just because they are ND.

I hate them for that reason and that one alone.

BTW, I'm Catholic and Irish.

It is that racist Punch cartoon of a mascot, that is why so many Irish and Irish-Americans hate ND. That evil imp belongs on the same list as Chief Iliniwick and other most offensive college mascots. The Brothers and Fathers of the Holy Cross should know better!

Because Americans love an underdog and ND is anything but. Cheering for them is like cheering for the Yankees.
