I got one last year and had my toe swell up and had to go to the doctor. It wasn't a big deal (just an irritation) but I did some research and didn't like what I found. I was thinking of getting a professional nail kit to take to the spas. What'cha think? What about the foot spas (soaking tubs)?

I think that is a great idea taking your own kit to the spas. You might want to have them clean the soaking tub in front of you. There should not be a problem with asking since you are paying them for the service anyways.

I am so sorry to hear that you had to go through that. Many people have had it much worse. I have always done my own and I've only had 2 pedicures which were done at a nail salon. I found that I do a much better job than they do and it doesn't cost me a dime other than what I pay for products. Which you can get up to 20 or more uses out of. Mary Kay offers a really cool Spa Pedicure Kit. Click on the link below to see what's happening. www.marykay.com/shawnwilliams

Manicures and pedicures are safe as long as you go to a respectable and clean facility. If you arrive somewhere and there tools don't look clean, or aren't be soaked in a cleaning liquid, leave. I just moved, and am looking for a nail place/spa. I definitely know what I'm looking for in a place.

They are perfectly safe. You just need to be careful of where you go. You can request to see the utensil cleaning solution the utensils soak in to see if nail clippings and dirt are at the bottom of the container; if they are, you have every right to request they clean the utiensils prperly immediately for your use and for others use...or you will be reporting them to the state board of health. Simple as that. Also, notice your surroundings. Are they clean? Neat? Are the people kept neat and clean themselves? When it comes to manicures and pedciures, be very careful of the type of venue you visit...you have to be aware of your surroundings. They are safe, but you need to make certain they are safe for you.
