I live in an apartment building and the building offers free WIFI internet acsess to the residents. I've been trying to get on certain websites that use Java programs, but it never works. Is there any way around this? using ports? proxys? I have no clue.

I agree with the person above that it is probably a settings issue. The only other possibility that I can think of is that the WiFi administrator has a bandwidth limit that limits the size of the files you can download/transfer over the network. If this is the case though, you should't be able to download any large files.

Check your browser to see if you have Java turned off. It should be in the settings.
