I am trying to find out how many "ring" gears would go into a 4-speed, 5-speed and 6-speed automatic transmission. Thanks for the answers so far, they have been quite helpful.

It seems like me & Nerd are the only ones who really understand your question and understand that your NOT talking about differential/final drive ring gears !! So here is the answer your looking for. There is a gear called a ring gear that it part of the planetary gearset. The ring gear is the one that has the teeth on the inside, and surrounds the rest of the gears in the gearset. The amount of ring gears depends on 2 factors. How many speeds the transmission has and the type of gearset. There are 3 types of gearsets used in automatics. Generally a 3 speed auto will have 2, a 4 speed will have 3. The five speeds used the same gearset configurations as the 4 speeds, but just apply the controls differently to achieve 5 speeds. Again, it depends on the type of gearset used. Some Ford transmissions used only 1 ring gear.

The ring gear is a component of the differential, as in ring and pinion. In an automatic transaxle as used in front wheel drive cars there would be one. There is ring gear on the flywheel or flexplate for the starter to engage. However that item is a part of the engine. So the correct answer would be none on a rear wheel drive automatic and one on a front wheel drive automatic.

Depends on how many speeds the transmission has. A two-speed and reverse would have one ring gear, one sun gear and three or four planet gears.

A ring gear is located in the differential(rear wheel drive) or in the trans axle(front wheel drive) but not in the transmission

Well not sure what you mean, when you say ring gear i think of the rear end ring and pinion gears. now an auto trans does have gear clusters that reduce engine rpm's but i dont know exactly what the name is for them but there linked to each clutch pack
