Aid them in finding books; their hobbies will correlate to their reading. The more interested in something they are, the higher chance there is of them picking up a book of their own accord. I speak only from experience; having a little brother who despised reading, whereas I was the book fiend. I'm only 14, but I know what it's like to pick up a book that reminds you of what you love, and to cherish it for a long time.

Read their school reading book with them every day.
Point out words when you're out and about, so they can see how useful being able to read can be - eg "toilets", "exit" "police"
Show them how to read what's in a packet so they can find their favourite food and drink.
Leave (simple) secret message for them to discover eg "there is chocolate in this fridge", "I love you", " holidays start tomorrow"
Ask them what words they would like to learn and make some flash cards - they'll learn the words they want to know even if they are long ones.
Good luck and have lots of fun!

Remember to be patient. Kids often get frustrated, but if they see that you haven't lost your patience they will keep trying. I heard The program hooked on phonics works well.
