The system favors the consumer because it motivates competition. Consumers get higher quality at lower prices because companies compete for their business. If you would like to contrast it with communism, look at what happened it Russia. The factories were state run and the workers were paid a communal wage. People were not motivate to increase productivity and companies were not motivated to improve quality. The result was scarcity of food and low quality goods. All of this resulted in the eventual disintegration of the Central Russian Government.
