I live in Washington state and my mom and step dad live in Key West. She just emailed me all of her financial info, place to find her will and stuff (very creepy) and she said they are not leaving! There is a mandatory evacuation order in effect where they are.
My question therefore is the following...
Is there anyone I can call (police) etc.. that can force them to leave before Ernesto gets there? I am out of my mind!
I cannot believe my mom would send me an e-mail like this.
Basically it said "If we die, here's where you can get our $$$"
Ahhhhhh! Who cares about the stupid money!
I need help! Any ideas?

I can't kidnap her she is 3000 miles from me!
She and my stepdad have a fair but of money so thats not why they are staying. The place they are in is a rental. They moved in, 2 days after Katrina because they had already rented it. My step dad works for the military base but is civilian. They are supposed to be moving to Pennsylvania next month, (sigh) My sister and brother who also live near me also cannot figure out why they won't leave. She emailed a few min. ago and said that it should be fine and that the weather stations are "making it out to be worse than it really is" YEAH RIGHT! My mom all of a sudden thinks she knows more than the weather experts! Now that's funny! Has anyone been in this situation? What did you do?

Thanks all! I spoke to my mom and they have made up their mind. They will prob. be alright it is just upsetting! To IGC... My step-dad works for the Military... they go to where they are told...PERIOD! So just because they are there in "hurricaneville" DOESN'T mean I don't love them. I am not that much of a control freak! I just don't want my parents to be like those stupid people who call 911 during the middle of a hurricane and want someone to come "rescue" them when they did not obey evacuation orders.
Thanks for all the info! I don't agree with my parent's choice, but I still love them!

call her and tell her how concerned you are for her safety. also, remember that she is an adult and has the right to make her own decisions, even if they don't seem that wise to you. you can also pray that God will protect her. that's what I'd do.
maybe, your mom will change her mind when she hears from you.

This comes from a person who has lived in Florida all her life: I think the media is exaggerating on the intensity of Ernesto. Katrina really has scared us all. But I think your mom and dad will be fine. If Ernesto hits, It's not going to be so bad since it will probably be a category 1. If it was something like a category 4 then I'd would be worried about their safety.

Well I apologize about the situation. I have seen people being stubborn not wanting to leave there home no matter what. If there is a mandatory evacuation then I think they will have to leave eventually but if there isnt one then I don't there's much you can do. Hopefully this works out.

1.) It's not a MANDATORY evacuation for the general public. Only for TOURISTS.
2.) If you are SOOOoooo worried about her, why did you let her move to an area KNOWN for hurricanes?

She is going to do what she's going to do. She's already made her plans. Call the local state patrol, local police or perhaps the red cross and give them the address and the situation of your parents. Then hope for the best.'
