i've grown used to my toilet whistling for the past couple months. not sure why it does it but you can hear it fron anywhere in the house. if you turn a faucet on elsewhere, it will change the pitch. it facinates me. the only problems i'm having is recently i'll be taking a shower and then my toilet will just start running, causing the pressure to be lost in the shower as well as it turning scoulding hot (usually while i'm shampooing :( ) any ideas?

A couple of things.
1. The toilet is probably running because the rubber stopper known as the flapper is worn out and needs to be replaced. Simple job.
Also sometimes the seat where the flapper seals the tank gets warn and may also need replaced. Little more difficult but not bad. If you end up going that far I found a different type of a flushing devise that actually works better than the standard flush valve. It's cone shaped and the cone seals against a large rubber washer.
2. I'm guessing this is an older house. Most newer homes have limiters on the water supply to prevent the scalding problem your talking about. All that it takes to fix that is a small brass washer with a very small hole to limit the water flow into the toilet. The toilet will fill slower but you won't burn your skin off if someone flushes. The problem is the water pressure for the cold water is dropping when the toilet starts to run. Limit the pressure to the toilet and the pressure to the other stuff won't drop so badly.
3. The whistling is the water going through the ballcock. Sounds like it's old too and could be replaced. Replace it and the sound will go away is my guess. Again not a hard job but messy if your not careful, have a few towels with you.

Best of Luck

Don't know what kind of guts you have in your toilet you probably have the old one with the flush plunger(big black or red ball).
Change this to the new one that eleminates this plunger and while you are at it change the flapper this is the reason why you are getting the whistling noise and the scalding showers. The flapper is leaking and the toilet is trying to keep the water level the same so it is slowley filling back up and it's so slow it whistles.Do this and you will fix your problem.
By the way make sure the new flapper only has one whole at the bottom and not bottom and side.

Simply stated it is the Flush Valve leaking. It is the device that is raised when you operate the flush handle. With it not providing a complete seal the tank seeps water into the bowl and when the tank level drops below where it is supposed to be to keep the water shut off the supply opens and you get a scalding shower. Replace the flush valve and your problem will go away.

Do not try and adjust the water level as that will not make a difference except that you may not get a good flush.

At first I thought it was just the angle valve having some problem, but then you said the toilet will run when you are taking a shower (I assume with no one flushing the toilet), so that leads me to believe you may have a bad ballcock valve in your toilet (it the tower in the tank that has the float attached to it) This is easy to replace and available at most hardware stores. Instructions are inside replacement valve. Try that, and chack your flapper valve to see if it is leaking too.

I thought i was the only one who had a whistling toilet. It also changes pitch when you go to wash your hands. I have only noticed the picth change in the bathroom. I have no clue but if you find out i would love to know, cause mine is driving me crazy.

Depends if blowing is considered whistling

Sounds like the toilet is running all the time. Try adjusting the float in the tank, if that fails, have a new kit installed in the tank. Good luck

flapper valve in tank could be leaking causing the ballcock assy(water valve in tank) to only open a small amount causing the sound
