It is a title given by the British Queen. And it is not just for cricketers but anyone renowned in their respective fields. So footballers, cricketers, politicians, businessmen, film stars , musicians etc if they are knighted by the queen they are called as Sir.
some of them in non cricketing field are Sir Elton John in music, Sir Ghulam Noon in business , Sir Anthony Hopkins an actor etc.

Some how indian cricketers usually miss out! Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar are examples!

Also the link given by the answerer before me on wikipedia is very informative.

Knighthoods are bestowed by the monarch of Great Britain (currently Queen Elizabeth II) on the recommendation of the governments of British Commonwealth countries.

They are for services in all sorts of fields, and not many sports people rate such a high honour. In fact according to Wikipedia only about 18 cricketers have been so honoured, the latest is Sir Richard Hadlee of New Zealand. So obviously, Kapil Dev was never nominated.

The answers above are correct in that 'Sir' is a title associated with a knighthood bestowed by the monarch of great Britain.

However, each country has conventions as to the application of this title. India does not accept it as on 'honour' since becoming a republic over 50 years ago. Hence kapil, Sunil etc are not knights. They are however, open to equivalent honours from their national government.

Australia recently stopped recognising this honour as well and instead have their own honour system.

Indeed very few Commonwealth countries still recognise this, apart from of course, Britain and I think NZ.

US citizens who are given this 'honour' by the UK monarchy are not allowed to use the title in the US.
