Head to head league. 20 yards per point, additional point at 50 yards. TDs are 6 points. Should I go with Vernon Davis or Mercedes Lewis at TE? Davis plays on a crummier team with a worse QB, but is more talented, is the only real receiving option, and is a tight end in a true West Coast offense.

Actually, you'd be better off going with Mercedes Lewis. Alex Smith clearly likes to go to Antonio Bryant, even when Bryant is double covered/not able to get himself open. If you watched any of the Niners' preseason games, Davis was open and several times in the last few games; yet most of the time Alex Smith didn't even look to him or overthrew him quite badly. Also, keep in mind that the 49ers still have Eric Johnson, who isn't quite as athletic as Davis, but as of now is a proven pass catcher. It's worth noting that Johnson led the team in receptions two years ago (he was injured last year), given that he is healthy now; there's no reason why they won't keep throwing him the ball. Mike Nolan has repeatedly shown a two-TE offense in preseason play; it also looks as if he's going to stick with double TE's into the season. That could very well hurt Davis's numbers.

On the flip side, Lewis has already established a nice relationship with Leftwhich early on in the preseason. Couple that with the fact that Jacksonville really lacks a premiere number 1 reciever, Leftwhich will probably be more secure going to his new target. Reports out of Jaguars' camp is that they're pretty impressed with the skills Lewis possesses; many wonder how he lasted all the way til the 28th pick.

My prognosis is: with Davis, you're getting a TE stuck in a two TE set, and unless Johnson goes down with an injury, Davis's numbers will be reduced. Byron Leftwhich is also a better QB right now than Alex Smith. Mercedes Lewis will probably be the better fantasy option for at least the first half of the season. Once the 49ers fall out of the playoff race and begin giving their younger players more playing time (towards the last few weeks of the regular season), then Davis will turn into a more viable fantasy option. But for now, go with Lewis.

Vernon Davis as a worse QB should get him more dump off passes, plus he is the better TE anyway.

Vernon Davis is my guess for rookie of the year I think...or at least a favorite...That Greg Jennings in Green Bay was looking very good so far...never know about Reggie yet either....But yeah...still Alex Smith or not...Davis has talent.

i'm nevertheless slightly iffy on Gates making it interior the direction of the completed season, so Davis may be an superb bench stash in case Gates gets injured. yet once you are going to pull a commerce, Mike Williams may be a great addition at your WR1/2. He and Nicks would be beasts this twelve months. i admire Johnson and Moss. Garcon is in a crowded receiving corp with question marks surrounding Manning.

Go with Davis. He is Alex Smith's safe target. If its a keeper league these are both good picks but if its just a normal league go with someone more credible.

go with davis. he is an athletic freak of nature and has the ability to make big plays. expect him to be the top receiver on the 49ers for the next few years.
