Hi! Ok, so tomorrow I'm getting full braces with an upper jaw expander and headgear that I have to wear when I sleep. I'm nervous about the jaw expander because I'm going back to school in a week and I'm afraid I'll sound stupid or drool on myself or something. If anyone has had one of these jaw expander things, if you have any suggestions about adjusting to them quickly or adjusting to braces in general, I would really appreciate it. Oh, also, I play the oboe (for those of you who don't know, it's a reed instrument), so if any of you also play woodwind instruments and have had one of these, and you have tips of how to adjust, I'd really be thankful for them. Thanks!! ^_^

I have braces, and I had the expander before too. I wouldn't worry about it too much, it takes about a week to get used to. The only advice I have about your braces it make sure you take note when you are eating, because things tend to get stuck in them and it could be kind of embarassing. And they don't really hurt, except for when you first get them on or when you go back to get a new wire or something. I play the clarinet, so I know what it feels like. It pretty much just feels a little sensitive, but nothing too major. It might take a couple tries to get used to, but it doesn't effect the way you play or anything. If you have any more questions, let me know and I'll be happy to help!

Ok well I've never had expanders and had to play a reed instrument so sory about that. But i do have braces and you should be able to adjust to your braces quickly. If that was part of your question. I adjused quickly and with just braces i didnt drool or anything. I did have a friend that had to get a bite plate and it wasnt so bad. It did however give her bad breath so she carried around breath mints always. But we both got threw it and you should to. Well i hope this helps so ok bie.

Well, braces are never easy to adjust to, or in my opinion. The first 2 weeks I was on soft foods, and my gums were super sensitive. I had a MARA, and I did accidentally drool, but it only happened once, and nobody really noticed. You just have to keep your mouth closed most of the time, and keep Advil with you. I'd pop one whenever the pain got really bad. After your 3rd or 4th month, when you go in to get everything tightened, the pain won't be as bad as the 1st and 2nd..so you won't need to have the constant soreness (yes..this is good). However...when your orthodontist says "its time for bands" prepare yourself for difficulty talking..and more pain...you will adjust, but they are hard to work with at first.

Hehe, hope this helps ya out ~ Elle

well, i used to have braces, and it takes a little while to get used to them. they will taste really weird when you first get them and your teeth will be sore the first few days. you will only be able to eat soft foods like yougurt and stuff like that. but in a few days you will be able to eat more foods and by the end of the week you can eat a lot more stuff. but the stuff you should stay away from is popcorn, corn on the cob, and gum. they will get stuck in your braces and it will be hard to get them out. sugar free gum is ok, but not the kind with sugar. that will stick to you really bad.
i didn't have a jaw expander, and i don't really know what that is, but i knew a girl that had one and she talked fine. she didn't drool or anything like that and she talked fine. don't worry about it. you will be fine!
best wishes!
<3 luv ya!

Braces aren't bad at all. they do however take some time to get used to and they are sore 2 or 3 days after you get them on or get them adjusted. I play clarinet and had a few problems at first but it all takes getting used to. You'll be fine. don't give up.

Well i just got braces and they have double wire so i went through a lot of pain. I play the flute but i had some trouble playing it at first. After a while, you'll get used to it. One thing you should really have is self esteem and self confidence. who cares if people make fun of you, just think about the positive thing its doing for you, you'll have a wonderful smile! and that's what people should really care about. hope this helps!

get wax (ask your orthodontists) to cover your braces or they will go through your lips when you play oboe, if you are out of wax fold a small piece of paper over your teeth, i'm a reed player...trust me
