building one right next to it. Basicaly what im asking is if you wanted to terraform mars by heating up the planet wouldnt it make more sense to build a mirror/lens closer to the sun then further away from it. Same could go for if you wanted to do the same for the earth if you had a way to use the energy of course. Maybe by putting something that could absorb and store energy near the earth and have the reflecting mirror/lens send light energy to it. :)

Wouldnt heating up mars itself make its atmosphere expand a lil in itself? But you do have a good point so basicaly all we would need is a way to put life on mars that can turn sunlight into air ect... I guess the easyest way to do that is by sending a lil bacteria factory of some sort there and putting water/light/air into its system and letting it spew out any extra stuff. It could use the ground of mars as a food sorce for the bacteria I would guess. This is probably a day or two away from what we currently have technologicaly capable tho but its a good thought I think maybe im wrong tho.

Heating isn't really the problem here. The real issue is the capability of Mars to *keep* the heat which the sun provides.

The atmosphere of Mars is about 100 times thinner than the atmosphere of Earth- therefore, all of the heat which reaches the planet is not kept very long.

Check out the provided link, especially the bit on the Martian atmosphere.

Cheers!

That would take a lot of time though, to create a whole atmosphere. Think of the hole in ours. And i don't know whether the gravity on mars is similar. Does atmosphere need gravity to remain?. The earth version sounds a good idea. But wouldn't it become a weapon too though if controlled by radio.
