i am doing a character analysis essays put in quotation marks or are they underlined?

I was a little unclear to what you were asking. You're missing some punctuation in there somewhere...but I'll try to guess what you meant.

Other than book titles, I can't think of anything else that should be underlined when writing a paper. Titles of essays, songs, poems, etc. are put in quotation marks.

General Rule for Titles:
If it's a short piece of writing, put it in quotations: if it's long piece of writing, underline it.
