I am applying to jobs, and many listings do not mention anything about providing cover letter, I think it is better to have one, although many friends tell me that all I have to do is send my resume...thanks

alibee80,

General Rule of Thumb: Always provide a cover letter unless they say they do not want one.

A cover letter is an excellent way of putting yourself apart from other applicants.

Don't listen to your friends. As a professional working in finance, I can definitely tell you that when I interview people for possible employment, I always look at things like that.

Your friends are wrong. It's absolutely essential in this marketplace to send a cover letter. A resume can give your basic background, but it says nothing about you as a person. The cover letter is what will give the employer a reason to call you based on what you can offer and what makes you a good fit for their firm.

Remember, proof read your resume and cover letter about 3 times before sending it out-any typos or misspellings are the kiss of death.

You don't have to, but imagine yourself as the prospective employer being inundated with resumes? The ones with well-written covering letters give more insight to the personality behind the resume and shows them you can string sentences together - it is also polite and professional. Go for it, but keep the letter short and to the point.

A cover letter seems more professional. It introduces you and can go into more detail about why you're qualified for the job than just a resume.

A cover letter is a simple way of introducing yourself to a potential employer. I agree that most job application don't require you to have one but your resume with a cover letter will make you look "professional".

a cover letter is a chance to sell your self if you dont have work ex and are looking for an internship like me ......but if you have work ex then the cover letter is a formality which makes your application look good its the resume that matters in this case.
applying thru references means that cover can be forgotten , but if dont know anyone there , then dont take chances.

It depends on what kind of job you are lookingfor. Retail, don't bother, however, if you are looking for a profession, not just a job, use a cover letter
