While I love Ian McKellen as Gandalf and find him to be an incredibly talented actor, I really feel like the two roles needed to be played by separate people. The general public confuse the actors (and characters) often enough without the added difficulty of them being played by the same person. While I think he would have done a phenomenal job, I feel like the directors and casting directors for each film made the right choices in their casting decisions.
