Daniel Defoe, Robinson Crusoe (1719) is often cited as the first novel in English.

The Tale of Genji is considered to be the world's first full-length novel. It was written by a noblewoman named Murasaki Shikibu in the early eleventh century.

The Iliad and the Odyssey aren't novels, they are
epic poetry. The answer to your question depends
on what you will accept as a "real novel". According to at least some authorities the first one
was written by Lady Murasaki in Japan, around the
year 1100, and it is called The Tale of Genji, the
Shining Prince. It gives a good picture of what
life was like in the Japanese Imperial Court at
that time.
