The armed services are tough and they can be strict, but for a young man his age with no father figure, it will be the best thing to happen in his life.
The service won't scar him for life, but they will be tough and demand that he grow tough; after it's all over, he'll appreciate that.

Being a member of any branch you are more than just a normal civilian. You are here to fight for this country no matter the cost, Marine, Airman, Soldier, or Sailor. They all fight and they all have their strengths and weakness. You can't bash another branch it's all US Military. Our Navy is the best in the world, our Air Force is the best in the world. Our Army is greatest of all Army's no matter the numbers. I'm sorry but whether you go through Marine, AF, Army, or Navy basic doesn't automatically make you John Cena in "The Marine" it comes from the heart. It depends on who you want to be and how much you really want to protect this country, your "title" does not matter. The only thing that matters is your are apart of the US MILITARY.

Spent 4 years in the Marines right after high school. it's good for you in a way. It gives you structure and discipline somewhat. It will be good for him as long as he's not looking for a father figure !!! And in today's state of affairs he's going to end up getting shot at by lunatic muslims so he might want to think of another way to get discipline.

I will tell you that Marines is a great source of discipline for anyone. The military in general will teach you respect and discipline, and many other good things, it has changed my husband which is in the Navy to be such a respectful person and I think you should be open to his wants and needs, just be supportive of him in what decision that he makes.

I have never been in the marines, but I hear they have good discipline plus a lot of bad things. Does he have access to some older wiser men say from the local church or social club who could step in and help. Usually men from the church will help a man in that position.

The military does instill discipline in you. But does he realize there is a war going on? Go to CNN and look at the list of men who have given their lives. Last year I was at the Walter Reed Army Hospital in D.C. I saw so many young men there missing limbs because of landmines. Your job as a troop is to win the nation's wars you will acquire discipline on your plane ride to Iraq.

Let him go! He sees where he needs help and is going for it! Be understanding. I give him a lot of credit for wanting the discipline! Not many would take that step!

I was unruly in High School. After serving in the Marine Corps, the discipline, Esprit de Corps, camaraderie, ability to adapt and overcome any situation placed before me, etc., etc., etc.
It was the BEST decision of my life to date.

Any sport will teach you discipline too, I would avoid the marines because they will only teach you how to kill others.
Karate is one sport that will teach you discipline of the mind. That will help alot.
