It was a huge money hole set up to funnel wealth to the rich by taking it away from the middle-class through taxation. The fact that they couldn't make it work, (Only successful tests of anti-missile system that worked involved target missiles with homing devices on them) didn't slow them down, but being such a blatant money grab, they had to tone it down and figure out a different way to rip off the middle-class (Bush's Tax "Reform")

Stupid projects die ignoble deaths. We can't even protect our borders from people crossing, how can we keep out incoming missles? The whole idea was just a ruse to be able to pour trillions of dollars into the military-industrial complex and charge it to future generations. At what cost to bring down the evil Soviet Empire?

I think it is still going as a project. However, all the tests have ended in failure. They just can't make it work. They always miss the missiles...

I think there's been spin offs from it - the big laser they were building is still used for research isn't it? Even though it wasn't quite finished!! Another 60 billion down the drain...! lol

The cold war ended so nobody saw the point in spending money on such crap, plus HEL's dont work that well anyway and space based weapons are illegal under internaltional law.
