What are some stereotypes of men that people associate with homosexuality?

I can think of a few activities/habits of men that people associate with being gay- please add any to this list that you can think of. What started the interest was a discussion today during my law class, whereby I explained that I used to dress up in drag, and put on the war paint, etc. Although I used to do this, I am a straight man. There are people who automatically assume that if you cross-dress, that you are homosexual. I was thinking that there may be quite a few attributes that (straight) men may have that have nothing to do with being gay- though people gratuitously make snap judgments and make these associations anyway.

Okay, for example:

1. If you are a man, and you cry, that means you're gay.
(Of course, this is bullsh*t. I cry sometimes, and I am not gay.)
2. If you are effeminate , then you are gay.
(Again, fallacious reasoning.)

Or:

3. Dudes who wear Hawaiian shirts are gay.

And so forth.

As with all stereotypes, they are grossly exaggerated but also MAY contain bits of truth. As a gay man, I can agree that SOME gay men have characteristics that are outside of the accepted gender assigned norms of our day. Most likely it is because gay people have different hormonal balances than straight people. In other words, a gay male has more female characteristics than the stereotypical straight male, and vice-versa for lesbians.
In reality, we are all on a spectrum of behaviours and hormones and you cannot pinpoint one thing in particular that would define someones entire identity.

People might think that a man is gay if he:

uses product in his hair, or blow-dries it
keeps his home immaculately clean and well-decorated
has impeccable fashion sense or dresses in flamboyant style
makes a good friend for single women
cooks as well as a gourmet chef
cries easily, or too often
has a high or soft voice
lives with another man

I don't buy into this, particularly since the whole "metrosexual" thing started - now "effeminate" has a new name, and it's confusing people even more!

Knowing a lot about women fashions and styles and health can lead other men to think your Gay. I study up on anything I can learn about women. It is anything but, however. I love women, personally and as a whole. I prefer their companionship to men. Maybe I'm a male lesbian....

i don't think that what you said makes you gay. i think a man who cries is a man with feeling that can be expressed and not always trying to be so manly all the time like they are superior above all. and it is okay for you to wear a hawiian shirt. you need to show them you feel confident about what you wear. it's like pink is not a man's color to wear, not true. some look very hansom in it.

wearing black turtlenecks sweaters or shirts. Waving their hands when they talk. Placing the palm of their hands on their cheek, touching your shoulder in a waving motion. Talking in a high shrill voice; Calling you honey, darling,etc.
